VCOP

This year our class has a new approach to writing. It's called VCOP and Big Write and what a difference it has made in our writing already!

VCOP stands for:

V- Vocabulary
C - Connectives
O - Openers
P - Punctuation

Each week in writing we have a new focus. Some weeks, we continue to work on the focus from the previous week so we can really master it! Mrs Szczepanik thinks we are amazing at using different punctuation like ellipses , commas, question marks, speech marks and exclamation marks.

We also have a different genre of writing. So far we have focused on Narratives and Persuasive writing. This term we are going to focus on Recounts, Poetry and Procedures so stay tuned to see some amazing examples of our writing!

Each week, we have a Big Write Session which allows us to really focus on different aspects of our writing. The night before our Big Write we bring home Talk Homework so we can gather lots of different ideas and vocabulary that we can use in our writing! When we do our Big Write there is relaxation music playing, the lights are off and we have flameless candles on our desks so we are relaxed and not distracted. So far Mrs Szczepanik has been so impressed with how far our writing has come from the start of the year - she has even had many happy tears.

Once we have finished our writing, the next day we look back over it and discuss what criteria we need to make our writing successful. For example a Narrative needs an introduction, event, problem and a solution. We then go through our work with different colour pencils (which correspond to VCOP) and circle the things we have done really well. After that, we create a list of Improvements Point and Effective Points. We use our Improvement Points to make a goal for the following writing session and see if we can become better at it.

So far we have all achieved many different goals and we LOVE our Big Write Sessions.
