National Simultaneous Storytime

National Simultaneous Storytime is a Literacy Initiative run is Australia to support and engage students to read books! Throughout Australia every Primary Class read a book called The Brother Quibble by Aaron Blabley. The book is about a boy called Spalding Quibble, who always ruled the roost. Until one day he got a brand new little baby brother called Bunny. Spalding didn't like Bunny so he raged a wore and drove his parents crazy. At the end of the story, Spalding and Bunny became best of friends.

The book that was selected for National Simultaneous Storytime.

Yesterday, as part of our Big Write Session, we had to make Spalding Quibbles crown and then write a procedure about how we did it. We learnt that a procedure explains the steps and materials we need to take to complete an activity. Procedures must have verbs (doing words) and be clearly explained.

Have a look at some of our amazing crowns we made.

Literacy Pro

Each night for home reading we take home a Literacy Pro book. Once we have finished reading the book, we then do a quiz. This helps us with our comprehension.

So far we have read nearly 500,000 words this year! By the end of the term Mrs S wants us to read at least 800,000. What a challenge!

Words read by Room 21!
We have also done 143 quizzes as a whole class! We should be doing at least 2 quizzes a week. It is important to finish the book before you do a quiz. It is also okay to have the book next to you when doing a quiz so you can find the information.
Look at all the quizzes we have done!

When we complete a quiz and pass it (which we need 70% to pass) Mrs S gives us a sticker on our Literacy Pro chart. Once we have filled all our sticker boxes up we can have free time. I wonder who is going to finish first!

Happy reading everyone!

Shhhh! Silent Letters!

This week our class did a review on silent letters. Silent letters are very tricky because you can't hear them.

Some silent letters we have learnt are:

- silent k which has a n after it - knowledge
- silent w which is usually with an r - wriggle
- silent b which is attached to a m - thumb
- silent n which is usually with a m - column
- silent u which is attached with a g - guest

We created posters to remind us of all the words we learnt. Now that they are up in class room we have something to look at when we get stuck with our spelling.

Did you know all of these words had silent letters? Tricky stuff!

Celebratory Class Lunch

Congratulations to the beautiful Year 3s of Room 21 who just completed their first ever NAPLAN! They did an outstanding job and tried their absolute best. No one gave up and worked until the last second. I am one extremely proud teacher.

In order to recognise the huge effort all the students put in throughout this week, we are going to have a class lunch on Friday the 22nd of May. Your child will be bringing a note home this afternoon explaining what they will be required to bring. It is lovely way to celebrate students hard work!

Once again a huge congratulations Room 21!
Very proud of themselves!

Week 4 Term 2 Timetable

Week 4 is NAPLAN week and due to this many things have changed.

  • This week your child will not have any new spelling words but they are required to revise all their spelling lists from the year. In particular, paying close attention to the sounds they have learnt. A revision test at home could be an idea, to see if they have retained the sounds and understand the letters that make up that sound.
  • There will be no TALK homework this week, as students will be doing a practice write on Monday.
  • Wednesday Word Problems will still be sent home Wednesday and Maths Homework should still be completed.
  • During this week, I have told the students not to work on their Paper Bag Book Review and just focus on their spelling and maths homework. They will have 2 weeks after NAPLAN to still complete their book reviews.
  • Library will be on Friday the 15th instead of Wednesday the 13th. Please make sure all library books are returned.
  • In a post below titled NAPLAN you can see the timetable for the tests.
Thanks!

NAPLAN - A note from Mrs S

Hi Parents,

As I'm sure your very aware of by now, NAPLAN testing will be conducted next week. The students are a mixture of nerves and excitement. Please continue to reiterate at home that NAPLAN is all about giving the test your very best efforts.

We have been doing some practice NAPLAN tests in class and I have been extremely proud of the way the children have applied themselves to giving it their all and completing the tests within the time frame.

During this somewhat stressful and intense time for your child, there a few things you can do to assist them at home.

-Please ensure they have plenty of sleep the night before
-In the mornings having a healthy, nutritious breakfast is also beneficial
-They need to be at school by the first siren at 8.30am so they are relaxed and can prepare for the test calmly as the tests are timetabled to start at 8.50am
-Encourage them to give it their absolute best
- Discuss any feeling and emotions they have coming up to and after the tests

Below is the NAPLAN timetable.

TUESDAY
8.50am Language Conventions
10.50am Writing

WEDNESDAY
8.50am Reading

THURSDAY
8.50am Mathematics

Catch up tests will be done on Friday but please try and ensure your child is there to complete their assessment.

I am sure that each child is going to give the test their all. It is a great indication to see where your child sits in relation to other children around Australia.

If I can assist you or your child at all during this time please come and see me.

Thank you,

Caris Szczepanik

Paper Bag Book Review

Over the next few weeks we have to complete an English project called, The Paper Bag Book Review. This week we bought home everything we needed to complete the task. If you have any questions about it please email or speak to Mrs Szczepanik. Below are a list of instructions just in case you misplace the sheet:

-Students must read a book
-Design a book cover on the front of a paper bag (different to the original one). The cover must include a title, picture and the author.
-Students then complete the book review sheet based on the book they have selected.
-Select 3 items to represent the significant factors of the story (One to represent a character, one to represent the setting and one to represent the problem.)

-Write an explanation of why they included each item.

Our projects are due to Mrs Szczepanik by Friday the 29th of May Week 6. No excuses for late assignments will be accepted as you have 3 weeks to complete it!

Happy reading.

3D Shapes

Over the past few weeks we have been studying 3D shapes! We have been drawing their nets, looking at their attributes, change the shape by quarter and half turns and much much more! Mrs Szczepanik now thinks we are shape stars.

Below are some examples of our Net Posters we worked extremely hard on. At first, it was very hard to draw the nets but when we broke it down and looked at the different 2D shapes that came together to make the 3D shape it was quite easy!

We are very proud of our efforts.

Spelling Rules.

This year we have really been focusing on improving our Spelling and learning all our spelling rules. So far, we have learnt 5 important spelling rules.

  1. When there is more than one we add an 's'
  2. When a word ends in sh, ch, s or x we have to add 'es'
  3. Words that end in f we change it to a v and add 'es' when there is more than one. For example: leaf - leaves
  4. When we add a suffix such as ed, er and est y changes to an i then we can add a suffix
  5. When we add a suffix, such as ing or ed, to a word with a short vowel we need to double the consonant to protect the vowel. For example: hop - hopping
We created posters on our spelling rules to help us remember to use them in our writing. Below are some examples.
